What is TMJ Disorder?

Your temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull and are responsible for all of your jaw movements, including eating and speaking. When these joints become stressed, misaligned, or inflamed, the result is TMJ disorder (sometimes called TMD), which is a condition that can cause jaw pain, headaches, ear discomfort, neck tension, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully. It’s unfortunately a very common and widespread issue, but thankfully one that can often be successfully treated and managed.

Occlusal Splints

An occlusal splint is a custom-fitted oral appliance worn over the teeth to relieve pressure on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. By gently repositioning the jaw into a more relaxed, balanced position, it reduces the strain that drives many TMJ symptoms. Better yet, these splints are non-invasive and comfortable to wear since we carefully design them for your specific smile, right here in our office.

Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustment

Sometimes TMJ issues are the result of an improperly balanced bite, which causes certain teeth to make contact with each other unevenly. This leads to excess stress placed on the jaw joints. We can use equilibration to make precise adjustments to the biting surfaces of your teeth, encouraging a more harmonious bite and addressing the root cause of your TMJ pain.

Treatment with a TENS Machine

TENS, which stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, uses gentle, painless, low-frequency electrical pulses to relax the muscles of the jaw and face that become overworked and tense due to TMJ disorder. It's often used as part of a broader TMJ treatment plan to maximize comfort and improve long-term outcomes.
