7 Tips for Adjusting to Eating with Dentures

Eating with dentures for the first time can feel like learning how to chew all over again. Whether you’ve received a full or partial set, adjusting to your new dentures takes time, patience, and a few practical strategies. The good news? Most people can return to eating their favorite meals once they’ve gotten used to their new dental appliance. If you’re just beginning your journey with dentures, here are 7 helpful tips to make eating more comfortable and enjoyable.
1. Start with Soft Foods
In the first few days after receiving your dentures, your gums may still be sensitive. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing, such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, oatmeal, eggs, applesauce, or well-cooked vegetables. These foods are gentle on your mouth and allow you to become familiar with how your dentures feel when you chew.
2. Cut Food into Small Pieces
Even when you’re ready to move on to more solid foods, it helps to cut your food into small, bite-sized pieces. This makes chewing easier and reduces the risk of dislodging your dentures. Avoid taking large bites, especially at first, as this can place uneven pressure on your dentures and gums.
3. Chew Slowly and Evenly
