Note that SDF is not a means of repairing a decayed tooth;\ninstead, it\u2019s meant to stop the progression of cavities and help prevent new\nones from forming. It\u2019s particularly useful for baby teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the Benefits of SDF?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your child has trouble holding still at the dentist\u2019s\noffice due to their age or a disability, SDF is often a good option because the\nprocedure can be completed rather quickly. Your child won\u2019t experience any\ndiscomfort, and there\u2019s no drilling involved. In most cases, SDF is an effective\nway to halt tooth decay in its tracks. It\u2019s best used in the earlier stages\nbefore too much structural damage is done to the tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Dental Sealants?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another excellent noninvasive defense against cavities is\ndental sealants. These are thin, plastic coats that, like SDF, are applied to\nthe surfaces of the teeth. The plastic bonds with the surface of the enamel and\neffectively serves as a shield against food particles and plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental sealants differ from SDF in terms of purpose; while\nSDF can be used to fight against decay that is currently happening, dental\nsealants are meant to stop cavities from forming in the first place. Also, sealants\nare usually specifically used on the molars in the back of the mouth that are\nmore difficult to brush due to their position and the various grooves and\ndepressions on the enamel. SDF, by comparison, is generally applied to\nwhichever teeth need the treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s with SDF or dental sealants, the best way to save\nyour child from painful tooth decay is to make sure they\u2019re seeing a dentist\nfor kids at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. Don\u2019t forget to ask\nwell in advance what the practice offers in terms of preventive care; your little\none\u2019s smile only deserves the best available!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
